NAME

Emma Hawkes

WHAT DO YOU DO?
Music Industry Production Manager/Stage Manager

FAVOURITE BAND?

I can't say I have a favourite - there have been so many different ones throughout my life.

FAVOURITE SONG?

Depends on the day/year

FAVOURITE FEMALE ARTIST AND WHY?

Abbe May - cause she can blues, she can pop, she's not afraid to evolve and she's a humble and fun artist to work with.

IS THIS WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF?

When I first left school I wrote down what I wanted in 10 years and put it in an envelope... I wrote - getting paid to work and travel.. so yeah! doing it.

THREE OF YOUR HARDEST MOMENTS?

Emma_1 2.jpg

In life - losing my father figure and continuing on with work and face the every day with a game face. Being utterly exhausted and still having another show day to get through - missing loved ones while on tour.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO NEXT?

Touring internationally with an artist.

FORKS IN THE ROAD, HOW DO YOU MANAGE THEM?

I think about the future and where I want to end up.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORK ETHIC

Work as a team, until the job is done, if there is a job worth doing - its worth doing properly.

DO YOU HAVE RITUALS? WOULD YOU SHARE ONE WITH US?

I do enjoy a bit of morning yoga before tackling a long day. Helps me bring my head and body back together .. and helps me remember to breath.

HOW CAN WOMEN BEST SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER?

Working in the music industry its tough to have a girl gang - I’d have to say I have more men that are my gang and who look out for me and who I trust.

WHAT MAKES A WOMAN ELECTRIC?

Someone who has the ability to be witty, thoughtful, peaceful, intelligent, and observant.. I try to strive for this every day - even though sometimes its hard!

HAVE YOU COME UP AGAINST RESISTANCE WITH WHAT YOU’RE DOING? HOW DID YOU MANAGE IT?

As a woman in the music industry there is the occasional person that doesn't particularly like being told how to do things - I manage these people by finding out what there needs are - whether its being heard - feeling important etc. Its important to be logical in your direction and sympathetic to different peoples ego.

WHAT MAKES YOU WANT TO GIVE UP? HOW DO YOU BOUNCE BACK?

Having to get up AGAIN after doing 2/3 sometimes 4 shows B2B with no sleep. I bounce back from getting the energy from my team around me - and being grateful for the opportunity to do what I love.

WHAT WOMEN DO YOU LOOK UP TO?

I look up to any woman that tours in the music industry - any woman that has the guts to step up to a male dominated industry - any woman that speaks out against injustice or prejudice. Mothers that have to hold down a job and a family and women who do what they do because it feels good and not because they feel they have to prove a point. Having a chip on your shoulder about your gender or age puts people of side and is mentally unhealthy. I like real people who know what they want, have a humble and direct manner and who aren't afraid to be who they are.

DO YOU HAVE ANY LITTLE SECRETS TO FOLLOWING YOUR PASSION?

Don't take no for an answer... also the more you put in the more you get out. A positive attitude goes a long way.

WHAT WERE YOU LIKE AS A KID? HAS ANYTHING CHANGED?

Loud and a good sleeper. Not much has changed :)

WHAT WERE YOU LIKE AS A TEENAGER? WHAT MAJOR THINGS DID YOU COME TO REALISE AS YOU GREW UP?

Individual. It’s important to maintain a calm state of mind and heart. Don't sweat the small stuff. Experiences are more important than possessions.
